FAI's latest carbon-neutral hangar opens at Nuremberg Airport

A new 4,800m² carbon-neutral maintenance hangar has been built, at a cost of €7m (US$7.6m), at Albrecht Dürer Airport in Nuremberg, Germany. At least 10 new engineering jobs, plus other support positions, have been created by the opening of FAI Asset Management’s Hangar 8.

Carbon neutral status was achieved by purchasing carbon credits from the EU Emissions Trading System, supporting global projects to neutralize greenhouse gas emissions. FAI’s existing Hangars 6 and 7 are also certified carbon neutral.

Hangar 8 has 4,500m² of hangar space and 300m² of office space. FAI Technik will provide line maintenance services for a range of aircraft from the facility. It will also be used for aircraft storage – it can accommodate three A320s or five Bombardier Global Express types.

“We are delighted to complete our new carbon neutral Hangar 8 development on time and on schedule,” said Siegfried Axtmann, chairman and founder at FAI. “We are also pleased to be bolstering our 60-strong engineering team with new local jobs in Nuremberg. Our growing team will maintain our own fleet as well as the privately owned aircraft we manage. The team will also support our expansion into the aircraft storage market. With the number of aircraft for sale in Europe increasing, there is a need for air-conditioned hangar space to keep them in mint condition before a sale takes place.”
