Flying Colours completes medevac interior for Bombardier Challenger 650

The first Bombardier Challenger 650 medevac interior was completed by Flying Colours under contract from Bombardier Specialized Aircraft, for Swiss Air-Rescue Rega. The aircraft is the first of three on order for the air ambulance operator.

The interior was completed on time and on budget, with the aircraft redelivered in April 2018. Flying Colours’ design engineers worked with Bombardier and AeroLite, a medical equipment specialist that supplied the intensive care unit (ICU) and interior reconfiguration adaptation plates.

The cabin can be used as an ICU for two patients, accompanied by critical care specialists, or can be configured for as many as four patient units and a medical team. There is ample space for additional medical equipment. The layout has been designed to ensure easy egress and access. Soundproofing has been strengthened to reduce noise levels.

A further four to six seats, depending on configuration, can be included. The two aft galleys feature Enflite ovens, coffee makers and customized double-width fridges that provide extra space for medical supplies. There is a lavatory next to the baggage area. There are also two bunk rest areas at the front of the cabin, for the flight deck crew.

The majority of non-medical monuments, furnishings and interior components were designed and manufactured by Flying Colours. The company secured the STC from Transport Canada Civil Aviation and EASA. Paint work was completed at Flying Colours’ headquarters in Peterborough, Canada.

“We welcome the challenge of designing and installing all our customized interiors, whether for a VIP configuration or a special mission,” said Sean Gillespie, executive vice president at Flying Colours. “However, knowing that this particular interior was the first one on a Challenger 650, and will literally be responsible for life-saving missions, gives all of our team great satisfaction. We know the customer is very happy with the outcome and we look forward to delivering two more aircraft of equal quality and standards.”

The second and third medevac Challenger 650s are scheduled for completion by the end of 2018. “Our special missions team continues to expand,” added Gillespie. “As we complete each aircraft, so our knowledge increases exponentially. It is an area we will continue to focus on, along with our VIP completions and refurbishments.”
