Greenpoint Design shares all about the Dichotomy concept for the BBJ 737-8
Dichotomy is a purely conceptual project that aims to unite the contrasting forces of technology and nature, the latter through organic shapes and natural materials. Greenpoint Design crafted the BBJ 737-8 interior with tech executives in mind, focusing on comfort, technology, sophistication and sustainability.
The cabin is designed to be versatile, catering to a wide range of passenger preferences. The main cabin is adaptable for various activities, from virtual business meetings conducted on transparent and curved OLED screens, to social gatherings, entertainment and relaxation.
“Multifunctional integrated tables cater to both work and leisure, while advanced entertainment systems and customisable ambiance options – both lighting systems and screen projections – enhance the travel experience,” says Annika Wicklund, senior director of design at Greenpoint Technologies. “Expansive OLED screens replace traditional windows, enveloping the fuselage in a helix and introducing a dynamic visual element with projected imagery. The helix creates a canopy-like structure, further enriching the immersive environment.”
Natural elements are included throughout the cabin, including fabrics with rich textures and natural colours. “Reflective mirrors and metallic finishes harmonise with light walnut wood and boucle accents,” says Wicklund. “Materials and finishes were carefully selected with a focus on sustainability and durability. Where possible, sustainable, eco-friendly materials were prioritised to include responsibly sourced wood veneers and low-VOC paints and adhesives.”
Perhaps the helix-screen structure would be the most challenging element to implement. “We are seeing growing opportunities for curved OLED screens in the aircraft cabin – which offer elegant solutions to adapt the cabin’s mood,” says Wicklund. “Dichotomy pushes that capability by wrapping sections of the floor to ceiling, moving forward and aft. We believe this is possible and would require overcoming some technical challenges to ensure the highest performance, safety compliance and installation precision.”
Key features of the cabin include:
Helix structure
The helix-inspired architecture is central to Dichotomy’s design, symbolising the contrast between man-made structures and natural forms while instilling a sense of continuity and flow throughout the cabin.
Lighting
Customisable lighting systems allow for personalised ambiance. In addition, energy-efficient lighting technologies are integrated to minimise power consumption.
OLED screens
The expansive OLED screens create a canopy-like structure with projected, adaptable, nature-inspired imagery. “This technology not only enhances functionality but also reinforces the integration of advanced technology with the natural aesthetics,” says Wicklund.
