Carl Software has unveiled an augmented reality (AR) headset aimed at maintenance technicians. In partnership with IRIT, the prototype is currently being tested in Toulouse, France.
The idea is to equip field technicians with all the information they need for maintenance work, right before their eyes. Using 3D vision, technicians can create a ‘virtual workbench’ anchored in the physical space where the work is to be performed. With a gesture, they can place the information needed for a technical operation within their field of view.
In real time, they can display a 3D model of the machine being worked on, and the list of operations to be performed and checked off. They can produce an augmented report with full context and access remote assistance via Skype, sharing a live view with the hotline. The company says the solution enables technicians to control data fully, to ensure faster and safer work.
Carl Software is working with partners and customers to test concrete examples of field work and support to speed up the innovation process. The objective is to implement the technology by 2021.
