STG Aerospace has launched a new emergency floor path marking system, saf-Tglo eco E1, which is designed to illuminate the exit ways for optimum cabin appearance, while delivering sustainability improvements across the product lifecycle.
The product was officially launched at Aircraft Interiors Expo 2024. The company noted this floor path marking system marks an environmentally sensitive design approach to its existing saf-Tglo SSUL-X11 range. It added that passenger safety is paramount, and there was no compromise on performance, reliability or cabin aesthetics.
The key differences of saf-Tglo eco E1 include its use of recycled materials. The new plastic insert is produced using 80% post-consumer recycled waste and the track is made with 50% recycled polycarbonate.
There are also no “forever plastics”. A new biodegradable additive within the track means it will biodegrade at end of life, STG said. The company added that it has limited control of what happens to saf-Tglo products at end of life, but this biodegradable version means if eco E1 is sent to landfill, it will break down.
The product also utilises a 100% water-based resin for the photoluminescent inserts, which the company said eliminates solvents and ensures emission levels stay consistent through a tightly controlled manufacturing process.
“Sustainability is a priority across the entire aerospace industry and every firm needs to do its bit to work towards reducing the impact of its activities and products on the environment,” said Dr Sean O’Kell, business unit director. “Though photoluminescent floor path marking is inherently more sustainable than electrical alternatives (which are heavier, require power, and cause more fuel burn), it has been our mission to find ways to develop more sustainable options.”
“We have done a lot of research into sustainable material options,” O’Kell continued. “During that difficult process of incorporating recycled materials into our designs, we have made innovative steps that have led to two patents. We are excited and proud to offer our customers an eco-friendly alternative floor path marking, and play our part in supporting a more sustainable future.”
To support the launch STG is working with Ecologi to plant 5,000 trees. Ongoing for every length of saf-Tglo eco E1 sold, one tree will be planted. A Certified B Corporation, founded in 2019, Ecologi enables businesses to calculate their carbon footprint and support climate action projects.
