August 30, 2017 – The dual-directional antennas that will be used with the Gogo Avance L5 system from Gogo Business Aviation have been granted STC and PMA approval from the FAA.
Formerly known as the Gogo Biz 4G LRU, Gogo Avance L5 will enable passengers to stream video and audio live, watch on-demand movies and use their smartphones. It could also enable remote diagnostics and inflight support, plus real-time data for cockpit apps.
Many STCs are being pursued by Gogo’s dealers and OEM partners, to certify the system for more than 40 types of business aircraft. Gogo says the system could be installed on most other business aircraft models using existing STCs. The equipment package will include dual-band 802.11ac wi-fi service and various other features, in a single box.
The Gogo Biz 4G network relies on a ground network of more than 250 towers and fiber backhaul. The new system also provides an upgrade path to Gogo’s Next Gen network, which should launch in 2018. Using an unlicensed spectrum, proprietary modem and beam-forming antenna, the Next Gen network is designed to produce speeds of up to 100Mbps.
