Lufthansa Technik has announced its tail-mounted twin antenna radome two-in-one solution (TIOS) will soon be ready for Ka-band systems. With an updated radome, Ka/Ku and live-TV antennas from various vendors can be installed.
The new TIOS Ka will be available for first-time installations and as a retrofit solution. An upgrade to Ka-band will be provided for TIOS-equipped aircraft delivered in the summer of 2015.
TIOS can accommodate a wide variety of mechanically steered satcom and database broadcast satellite (DBS) antennas chosen by the customer. As an optional feature, a forward-looking camera can be installed. If a customer would like to use an antenna without an STC (supplemental type certficate), Lufthansa Technik will be happy to look into a possible adaptation, depending on the size and weight of the antenna.
Lufthansa Technik says TIOS saves space and, depending on the scope of the installation, up to 45kg in weight compared with a standard configuration with two separate fuselage antennas. The corresponding LRU rack is part of the TIOS installation kit. The TIOS is available and FAA/EASA- certified for all BBJ and BBJ2 aircraft.
