JPA Design has revealed Afterglow, a new private jet retrofit concept. The design prioritises passenger wellbeing as well as sustainability.
The highly customised redesign includes a biodynamic lighting system. This wall-mounted orb synchronises with the overall cabin lighting and replicates the solar movements of the sunrise and sunset. The system is designed to adjust to optimal lighting scenarios based on flight time and destination time zone, aligning with passengers’ natural circadian cycles.
By choreographing the environmental lighting, the Afterglow cabin is designed to facilitate passengers’ physiological adaptation to destination time zones during flight, to effectively mitigate the effects of jet lag.
“With ‘Afterglow’, we’re redefining what luxury means in private aviation,” said Elliott Koehler, creative director at JPA Design. “True luxury today isn’t just about aesthetic beauty – it’s about creating environments that actively enhance our passengers’ wellbeing. Every design decision, from our lighting system to the intuitive cabin layout, serves both form and function.”
The cabin’s layout also prioritises both comfort and functionality. Positioned at the rear for optimal privacy, the washroom doubles as a changing room, while the convertible sofa-to-double bed is strategically offset to ensure unobstructed washroom access in any configuration. The design integrates luxury amenities including a custom mini bar, full-length wardrobe, and bespoke side furnishings.
JPA Design said that its commitment to sustainability is evident in the retrofit approach itself, and that as the private aviation sector grows, many operational aircraft face premature retirement due to outdated interiors. Afterglow is designed to breathe new life into existing aircraft through innovative design solutions, and to reduce waste while elevating the passenger experience.
While initially developed for the private aviation sector, JPA Design said its approach signals a broader vision for the future of commercial aviation.
