Winch Design is expecting 2020, its 35th year, to be a busy one, including the delivery of three private jets outfitted with its designs. Other ongoing projects involving the design firm include nine yachts in the build stage, and seven architecture projects.
The combined yachts and aviation studio, with Jim Dixon at the helm, is working on a number of very different projects. These include two ACJ320neo jets and one Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. In 2019 the team revealed two concepts, Project Miami and The Yoga Concept (pictured). The latter is a finalist in The International Yacht and Aviation Awards, and the winner will be revealed in May 2020 at a ceremony in Venice, Italy. The studio is working hard putting together new concepts to be revealed to the general public this year.
Included in the nine yacht projects are the 77m M/Y Black Shark, in build at Nobiskrug, Germany, and from Heesen, the 67m M/Y Sparta and 80m M/Y Cosmos.
Black Shark, scheduled for delivery in 2021, has a matte black finish to mimic the texture of shark skin. Sparta, due for delivery in 2023, will have a bespoke exterior and interior by Winch Design and despite showcasing a slick and sporty exterior, comfort and relaxation remain at the core of her design. Cosmos, delivering in 2022, will not only be the largest yacht in the Heesen fleet, but also the fastest and most technologically advanced.
Having already won awards at The Monaco Yacht Show in 2019, motor yachts Excellence and Tis are both finalists in the Boat International Design and Innovation Awards.
Meanwhile, the architecture studio, headed up by Simon Tomlinson, now accounts for 50% of the business activity at Winch Design. It is currently working on residential and commercial properties across the globe – from North America to the Indian Ocean.
Due for completion in March 2020 is a seven-storey private residence in Cape Town, South Africa. The ocean-facing side of this contemporary property invites the outside in with the colours and textures reflecting those of the mountains, beach and ocean.
2020 will also see the completion of Winch Design’s first venture into the luxury lifestyle sector. Inspired by the beautiful surroundings of the tropical island on which the 20-bedroom hotel stands, the design invites guests to indulge their senses in the colours, textures and spirit of The Seychelles. The boutique hotel will feature a private marina, enabling guests to travel directly to the island and moor their yacht alongside the private jetty.
In addition to the multiple awards ceremonies Winch will be attending in 2020, the team looks forward to attending industry events including the Corporate Jet Investor Conference in London, UK; EBACE in Geneva, Switzerland; London Design Week; The Monaco Yacht Show and more.
Winch Design also noted its focus on sustainability is stronger than ever and it is dedicated to realising innovative designs over the next decade that traverse the line between top-end design and sustainability.
